ASEAN’s power grids are becoming a critical constraint on the region’s energy transition. Electricity demand is rising, while many grids lack the capacity and flexibility to integrate more solar and other variable renewable energy. Although major transmission and distribution upgrades are essential, they take years to plan, finance and build. The immediate challenge is clear: how can ASEAN strengthen its power systems and unlock more renewable energy now?

The Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association (APVIA) sees distributed solar and energy storage as essential to building stronger, more flexible power systems. This high-level session will explore how rooftop solar, battery storage, microgrids and demand-side solutions can ease grid pressure, improve reliability and extend clean energy to islands, remote communities and industrial users.

Event Objectives

Held as part of the ASEAN Energy Business Forum and alongside the ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting, this session will bring together policymakers, grid operators, industry leaders and investors to:

• Establish a shared understanding of ASEAN’s grid constraints and their impact on renewable energy integration.
• Showcase practical and replicable solar-plus-storage solutions that improve grid flexibility and resilience.
• Explore microgrid models for islands, remote communities and industrial users that remain underserved by the main grid.
• Advance a shared vision for a resilient, renewable-ready ASEAN power system.
• Open dialogue on the role of private capital and private-sector expertise in grid modernization.
